a round table

Led by Dr Carmen Casaliggi of Cardiff Met University this round table seminar aims to bring together academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and the general public interested in the work of Coleridge in an informal, sociable setting. We will be paying particular attention to The Rime of The Ancient Mariner. It was originally published as the first poem in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads (1798), but we’re focusing on the later version (published 1817), in which Coleridge revised the earlier version and added the fascinating marginal glosses.

Topics to be discussed on the day include (but are not limited to):

(Global) Travels and Explorations;
Journeys and pilgrimages;
Literature of shipwreck and maritime disasters;
Abolition and Slavery;
Colonialism;
The exotic and the supernatural;
Transcendence and Finitude;
Apocalyptic landscapes;
The Rime as a conversation(al) poem;
The legacies of Coleridge in our present culture.

The session will conclude with a guided visit to the boat.
